Chronic Ear Infections, a Holistic Approach
Chronic ear infections (otitis) are a common issue in dogs, especially those with floppy ears or those prone to seasonal allergies.
They occur when inflammation and excess moisture create the perfect environment for yeast or bacteria to thrive. While medications may help short term, recurring infections usually signal an underlying imbalance, often linked to allergies, gut health, or diet.
A holistic approach focuses on why the ears are inflamed. Poor gut health, food sensitivities, and excess carbohydrates can drive yeast overgrowth and inflammation throughout the body, including the ears.
Supporting the gut with a quality synbiotic can make a lasting difference, because healthy ears start with a healthy gut. If your pet's ear infections persist, it's important to work with your vet to identify the root cause and restore balance naturally.
Routine ear care also matters. Use gentle vet recommended ear cleaners and avoid harsh alcohol based formulas that disrupt the ears natural balance.
If a dog has chronic ear problems, they may be at risk of developing a ruptured ear drum. In this case great care is needed with treatment - this is not a condition for routine cleaning or home remedies.
A ruptured eardrum (tympanic membrane) can occur after chronic infection, trauma, or inappropriate ear cleaning. These are painful and allow bacteria, yeast, or debris to enter the middle ear, which can cause deeper infection and even neurological signs such as head tilt or loss of balance.
In these cases, avoid all ear cleaners, drops, or herbal products unless specifically prescribed by your vet, as even natural ingredients can cause severe irritation or damage when the eardrum is compromised.
Your vet will confirm the rupture with an otoscopic exam and may recommend gentle systemic treatment, pain relief, and targeted therapy to address the underlying infection and inflammation.
Supportive, holistic care focuses on reducing inflammation and restoring internal balance through diet and gut health. A clean, anti-inflammatory diet can help, along with appropriate omega 3's and probiotic support to aid healing and reduce recurrence.
