BENEFITS OF ACUPUNCTURE FOR ARTHRITIC CHANGES
As our pets age, or when they are diagnosed with arthritis, many owners start to notice subtle changes, slowing down on walks, stiffness after rest, reluctance to jump, or simply “not quite themselves.” While medications certainly have their place, we often recommend acupuncture as part of a more holistic, supportive approach to managing pain and improving quality of life.
So why acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a gentle, evidence informed therapy that works by stimulating specific points in the body to promote natural healing responses. In arthritic and ageing pets, it can improve circulation to joints and surrounding tissues, reduce inflammation, release endorphins (the body’s natural pain relief), relax tight muscles and reduce compensatory tension and support nerve function and mobility
One of the biggest benefits we see clinically is improved comfort and mobility, pets often become brighter, more willing to move, and more engaged in daily life.
But why isn’t pain relief medication always enough on its own?
Pain medications are incredibly valuable and often essential, especially in moderate to advanced arthritis. However, they primarily work by blocking or dampening pain signals and inflammation, they don’t always address the secondary changes that occur in the body over time.
With chronic pain, we commonly see muscle tightness and compensation patterns, reduced circulation to affected joints, stiffness that persists despite pain control, and changes in movement that can place strain on other areas of the body. This is where acupuncture has an important role.
Acupuncture works alongside pain medication, not as a replacement, but as a complementary therapy. It helps address those secondary changes by improving blood flow, releasing muscle tension, and supporting the nervous system. In many cases, this combination allows pets to move more freely and comfortably than with medication alone.
For some pets, integrating acupuncture may also allow us to reduce reliance on higher medication doses over time, something many owners are keen to explore where appropriate.
What does treatment look like?
Every pet is different, but typically initial treatments are closer together, often once weekly for 3–4 sessions, and as improvement is seen, treatments are spaced out every 2–4 weeks. Some pets benefit from ongoing maintenance sessions to keep them comfortable long-term
For more advanced arthritis or complex cases, more frequent sessions may be needed initially, while mild or early stage cases may require less frequent support.
Importantly, acupuncture is very well tolerated by most pets. Many become relaxed, some even fall asleep during treatment!, and sessions are tailored to each individual’s comfort level.
We often use acupuncture alongside other therapies, including nutraceuticals, physiotherapy, weight management, and when needed, medications to create a truly integrative plan.
If your pet is slowing down, showing signs of stiffness, or has been diagnosed with arthritis, acupuncture may be a gentle and effective way to support their comfort and wellbeing.
