Understanding Arthritis

Hearing that your dog or cat has arthritis can feel overwhelming, but understanding the condition is the first step toward helping them live a comfortable, happy life. Arthritis, or osteoarthritis, is a degenerative joint disease that causes inflammation, pain, and reduced mobility. While its most commonly associated with ageing pets, it can affect animals of any age due to injury, genetics, developmental conditions, or wear and tear over time.

There are several forms of arthritis seen in dogs and cats. The most common is osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), where the protective cartilage within the joint gradually breaks down, leading to bone-on-bone friction and chronic inflammation.

Pets may also develop secondary arthritis following joint injuries such as cruciate ligament tears, hip dysplasia, or elbow dysplasia. Less commonly, immune-mediated arthritis can occur, where the body’s immune system attacks the joints, or infectious arthritis, caused by bacteria entering the joint space. Regardless of the type, the end result is discomfort, stiffness, and reduced quality of life if not addressed.

Diagnosis typically begins with a thorough clinical examination. We assess your pet’s gait, joint range of motion, muscle mass, and overall mobility. Subtle signs, such as reluctance to jump, stiffness after rest, changes in behaviour, or even reduced grooming in cats can be early indicators. Imaging, particularly X-rays, helps confirm changes within the joints such as narrowing of joint space, bone spurs, or sclerosis. In some cases, advanced imaging or joint fluid analysis may be recommended, especially if the presentation is atypical or more complex.

Treatment is most effective when started early, and a multimodal approach combining medical and holistic care offers the best outcomes. In the early stages, management may focus on weight optimisation, as excess weight places significant strain on joints, along with gentle, consistent exercise to maintain muscle strength and joint mobility. Nutraceuticals play a key role here, including joint support supplements containing glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3 fatty acids, green lipped mussel, and anti-inflammatory herbs. These can help reduce inflammation and support cartilage health over time.

As arthritis progresses, medical intervention often becomes necessary to control pain and inflammation. This may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), newer injectable therapies that target pain pathways, and adjunctive medications to support comfort. From a holistic perspective, therapies such as acupuncture, laser therapy, massage, hydrotherapy, and tailored herbal medicine can significantly enhance comfort and mobility while reducing reliance on pharmaceuticals where appropriate. Environmental modifications such as soft bedding, non-slip flooring, ramps, and easy access to resources are equally important in supporting day to day wellbeing.

In advanced stages, arthritis can become severely debilitating if not properly managed. Chronic, untreated pain doesn’t just affect mobility it impacts your pet’s mental and emotional wellbeing. You may notice withdrawal, irritability, decreased appetite, or changes in sleep patterns. Over time, muscle wastage and joint deformity can occur, further reducing independence and quality of life. It’s important to recognise that arthritis is not just “a normal part of ageing” it is a painful condition that deserves proactive care.

The good news is that with early recognition, appropriate treatment, and a comprehensive care plan, many pets with arthritis can continue to enjoy an active and fulfilling life. Whether your approach is primarily conventional, holistic, or a blend of both, our goal is the same, to reduce pain, support joint health, and keep your pet moving comfortably for as long as possible.

If you’re noticing even subtle changes in your pet’s mobility or behaviour, it’s always worth starting the conversation early because small interventions now can make a significant difference later.
