Commercial Dog Food vs BARF
Finding Balance & Where Nutraceuticals Fit
When it comes to feeding our dogs, there’s no one size fits all approach. Two of the most common feeding styles we see are commercial diets and raw feeding, often referred to as BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food).
Both can play a role in supporting your dog’s health, and each comes with it's own benefits and considerations. The key is understanding how to make each approach as balanced and supportive as possible.
Commercial dog foods particularly high quality, well formulated brands are designed to provide complete and balanced nutrition. They are convenient, consistent, and backed by nutritional research, which makes them a reliable option for many households. However, even with premium options, some nutrients can be affected by processing, and individual pets may benefit from additional support. This is where nutraceuticals can play a valuable role.
Adding targeted nutraceuticals to a commercial diet can help “fill in the gaps” and provide extra support where needed. Omega-3 fatty acids, for example, can help reduce inflammation and support skin, coat, and joint health. Probiotics are beneficial for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, particularly in pets prone to digestive upset or those who have been on antibiotics. Herbal blends and functional supplements may also be used to support liver function, immunity, or stress resilience, depending on your pet’s individual needs. The goal is not to replace the diet, but to enhance and personalise it.
On the other hand, BARF or raw feeding aims to more closely mimic a dog’s natural diet. When done well, it can provide excellent nutrition, improved palatability, and benefits for dental and digestive health. Many pet owners also appreciate the transparency of knowing exactly what is going into their pet’s bowl. However, achieving true balance with raw feeding can be challenging, and it’s important that diets are properly formulated to avoid nutritional deficiencies or excesses over time.
Even when using high quality pre-made raw brands such as Prime100, Big Dog Pet Foods, Proudi, or Lifewise, there can still be room for additional support depending on the individual pet. Nutraceuticals can help fine tune these diets supporting gut health with probiotics, adding omega oils for anti-inflammatory benefits, or incorporating specific supplements for joint, skin, or immune health. In some cases, additional fibre, trace minerals, or herbal support may also be beneficial to ensure the diet is truly complete and tailored to your pet.
Whether feeding commercial food, raw, or a combination of both, the focus should always be on balance, quality, and the individual needs of your dog. Nutraceuticals allow us to move away from a “one-size-fits-all” approach and instead create a more personalised plan that supports long term health and wellbeing.
As always, guidance is key. Not all supplements are necessary for every pet, and more is not always better. Choosing high quality products and using them appropriately ensures your dog receives the benefits without unintended imbalances.
