The Golden Flower for Healthy Skin
That cheerful orange and yellow flower growing in many herb gardens has a rather impressive history in traditional herbal medicine.
Calendula (Calendula officinalis), commonly known as marigold, has traditionally been valued for its soothing, skin supportive and restorative properties and is one of our favourite herbs for natural pet care.
For our dogs, cats and rabbits, calendula is particularly interesting when we are looking at healthy skin and gentle topical support.
Calendula preparations have traditionally been used to soothe minor skin irritation and support the skin's natural healing processes. This is why you will find calendula incorporated into many natural balms, creams, washes and skin products.
It can be especially useful as part of an everyday skin care routine, for example, when paws become dry or irritated, the skin is mildly inflamed, or after exposure to environmental irritants. Calendula can also complement a broader approach to pets prone to recurring skin sensitivity.
But there is an important distinction between supporting the skin and treating a skin disease.
If your pet has a hot spot, infected wound, persistent rash, significant swelling, discharge, intense itching or a skin problem that keeps returning, calendula alone isn't going to address the underlying cause. Allergies, parasites, bacterial or yeast infections, nutritional issues and other conditions may all require veterinary investigation.
This is where an integrative approach becomes particularly valuable. We can use gentle herbs such as calendula to support the skin while also asking why the skin is struggling in the first place.
Calendula is also a good example of why we need to consider the form in which an herb is used. A properly prepared calendula infusion, tincture, oil or balm is very different from a concentrated essential oil. The preparation, concentration and route of administration all influence how an herb should be used.
And although calendula is generally considered a gentle herb, natural does not mean universally appropriate. Pets can have individual sensitivities, and anything applied to the skin can potentially be licked and ingested.
The holistic philosophy is not about replacing everything with herbs. It's about using the right tool for the right situation, and sometimes a simple plant can be a wonderful addition to a carefully considered wellness plan.
Calendula is one of those beautiful examples of nature providing us with a gentle, versatile herb that can have a valuable place in our pet care toolkit.
