- The common nettle or stinging nettle is a perennial flowering plant native to Europe, temperate parts of Asia and western North Africa. It’s a member of a botanical family which numbers more than two thousand plants. It has a long history of use, particularly as a traditional medicine
Nettles could be considered a super herb for the various nutritional benefits they offer our dogs.
- Nettles are a good source of energy
- Made into a tea and used to bathe your dog, nettles can help improve your dog’s skin and coat condition
- The antibacterial, astringent and antihistamine properties in nettles make them useful for dogs who suffer with seasonal allergies
- Rich in fibre and the antioxidant chlorophyll, nettles are ideal for dogs who suffer from digestive disorders and urinary tract infections
Nettles can aid digestion and even help with relief from arthritis, they also offer a wide range of nutritional vitamins and minerals. In 10 grams, you’ll find: 3.4 grams of protein, 287mg calcium, 68mg phosphorus, 3.22mg iron, 65mg magnesium, 2mg beta-carotene, 345mg potassium, and vitamins A,C,D and B complex.
These vitamins come in a form that is very palatable and easily absorbed into the body without creating any stress on the digestive system, kidneys, or liver. Nettles make a superb natural supplement for dogs in need of vitamins and trace minerals in their diets, but do not need to be taking huge multi-vitamin supplements. They are an excellent addition to your dog's well-balanced diet.
Before adding any supplements or holistic treatments to your dog's regimen, consult with your veterinarian first.
